Lebanon: the survey on the fishery sector PDF Print E-mail

The survey which has been realized by SudgestAid, among the fishers and the harbor’s workers of Abdeh, closed to the Palestinian Refugees Camp of Nahr el Bared in the North of Tripoli, has been closed.
The activity has been conceived in the framework of the UNDP-Lebanon project, financed by the Italian Cooperation, for the assistance and support to the living conditions of the inhabitants of the area. The aim of the activity was to identify conditions and needs of the fishery sector in order to draft an integrated project to support that sector, which is one of the most important source of income for Lebanese and Palestinian inhabitants of that area.

Abdeh is one of the most important expression of the Lebanon fishery sector, thanks to more than 1200 fishers, 240 boats and 450 kg of fish catch per day. The shortcoming of the organization, the labour exploitation and the unjust distribution of income, the precarious health conditions and the obsolete equipment drop the development of an area rich in potentials. In the next weeks, on the initiative of the Italian Cooperation, will start a similar activity for the support of the fishers of the Naqoura harbour, in the South of the country.
